Jonathan, Atiku, Obi, Tinubu, pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on Thursday.

Britain's oldest monarch, 96, has died at Balmoral Castle, her estate in the Scottish Highlands, Buckingham Palace has announced.

His death drew messages of condolence from around the world.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Nigerian leaders

presented his condolences to the family while paying a vibrant tribute to the monarch

Mr. Jonathan described the late monarch "as a beloved sovereign with a strong sense of duty and service, a champion of social change and a protagonist of modern Britain.

"Her Majesty was a remarkable matriarch who

has long been an example of dignity, selflessness and compassion, and a symbol of unity between the nations of the Commonwealth."

Similarly, the Peoples' Democratic Party presidential candidate, Mr. Atiku, said the monarch's passing was a "crude shock".

"His passing is the end of a golden era. His reign was an era, not only in the United Kingdom, but throughout the Commonwealth," he wrote.

"The world has known only one queen and the passing of Queen Elizabeth II will mark the end of an impactful reign, and for the rest of our humanity, it will be the beginning of history."

Obi

For his part, Labor Party (LP) presidential candidate Mr Obi said in a tweet on Thursday that his death was an "irreplaceable loss".

"She had an impactful reign and a magnificent and explored life dedicated to democratic ideals, charity, selflessness and empathy," he wrote.

"He added that she will "always be remembered for the lives, organizations, institutions and countries she positively touched during her reign."

Tinubu

On the other hand, Mr. Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday expressed his condolences to the family of the late monarch and to the nations of the Commonwealth.

"With the sad passing today of Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom has lost one of its greatest monarchs of all time and the world has lost a much loved, revered and admired icon. ", he tweeted.

"His energy, dedication, deep sense of duty and firm belief in the glory of the United Kingdom, especially at the most troubling and troubled times of his long and distinguished reign, are the lasting legacies for which she will always be remembered.

"As the first British monarch to reach seven decades on the throne, her patriotic role sparked and nurtured a warm and lasting friendship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria."
