Lagos Assembly convenes Sanwo-Olu's assistant, commissioner

The Lagos State Assembly on Tuesday summoned one of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's aides and a commissioner for allegedly refusing to submit the contracts to the House for ratification before execution.

The House summoned them based on a “matter of urgent public importance” raised by Nureni Akinsanya (APC-Mushin I) in Lagos on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that those summoned are the Governor's Special Adviser on Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Ope George, and the State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Development Urban, Bamgbose Martins.

The Chamber has indicated that it must provide the legislator with information on its refusal to use it for ratification before the contracts are signed.

Mr. Akinsanya had urged the House to examine the flagrant disregard of state laws on contractual agreements.

He cited some PPP contracts that were allegedly entered into by the commissioner and Mr. Sanwo-Olu's assistant without following due process.

According to him, the trend must be discouraged and the law enforced, therefore all contracts must be suspended for the time being.

“I ask the House to invite the commissioner and other relevant agencies for questioning,” he said.

Rotimi Olowo (APC - Shomolu I)! said the officers involved and the contractors should appear before the House for review.

Commenting, Temitope Adewale (APC-Ifako-Ijaiye I) said that the House's ratification was in the interests of the people and the state.

Mr. Adewale said approving contracts without submitting them to the House for ratification showed a flagrant disregard for the rule of law.

House Deputy Speaker Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni (APC-Lagos Island I), who chaired the plenary session, ruled that the individuals be summoned.

Mr. Eshinlokun-Sanni said this was to provide the House with the required details, to give a clearer picture and to guard against an untoward development.
