New naira: Buhari sympathizes with Nigerians and defends his policies

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), on Thursday sympathized with Nigerians over the difficulties caused by the scarcity of new naira banknotes across the country.

However, he defended the policy saying it was necessary to curb illicit financial flows, ransom-taking and electoral malfeasance, among others.

While noting that the consequences of the Central Bank's new Naira policy are unintended, he said, "I am not unaware of the obstacles placed in the way of innocent Nigerians by unscrupulous officials of the banking sector, responsible for the process of implementing the new monetary policy.

"I am deeply saddened and sincerely sympathize with all of you for these unanticipated results."

“Let me reassure Nigerians that strengthening our economy, improving security and stemming the leakages associated with illicit financial flows remain our administration’s top priority.

"And I will remain committed to my oath to protect and advance the interests of Nigerians and the nation, at all times."
