The Nigerian government reaffirms its determination to revive ALSCON

The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, reaffirmed the determination of the Bola Tinubu administration to revive the Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON), Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, including by engaging with the key industry stakeholders.

Mr. Shettima said this Thursday during a meeting with the management of Russian Aluminum Company - UC RUSAL and other project stakeholders on the sidelines of the ongoing Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg, Russi

The meeting with stakeholders was part of the continuation of the federal government's efforts to reactivate ALSCON's production lines by reconnecting with UC RUSAL and other partners in the resuscitation of the plant.

Speaking after a presentation by the leadership of UC RUSAL, Vice President Shettima noted the enormous benefits for the economy in many aspects, such as in the field of energy transition and creation of jobs both directly and indirectly, and its impact on the development of small businesses are also enormous.

“The sooner we get this plant back into production, the better it will be for everyone. We must follow the lead; the people of Nigeria deserve better,” he said.

The Vice President urged all stakeholders to expedite work on the action plan to restart production at the company.

Other officials present at the meeting were Nigeria's Ambassador to Russia, Shehu Abdullahi; Nigeria's Ambassador to Germany, Yusuf Tugar; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Gabriel Aduda; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Mary Ogbe; and Managing Director of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Gbenga Komolafe, among others.

Earlier, Shettima joined other African leaders at the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum declared open by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mr. Putin noted in his opening remarks that the potential for trade and economic cooperation between Russia and African countries is much higher than the $18 billion trade turnover recorded in 2022.

He reaffirmed his country's commitment to food security in Africa and beyond, stressing that "Russia will continue to work to shape a more equitable global food distribution system".

He added that Russia will increase its support for Africa, which accounts for 65% of the world's arable land and about 10% of the country's renewable freshwater sources, noting that "its enormous potential for the future development of agriculture".< /p>

Mr. Shettima also attends a state banquet hosted by Mr. Putin for heads of delegation visiting the ExpoForum in St. Petersburg.
