Nigerian Police Arrest Man for Offering One Million Naira Bribe - Official

Kano State Police on Tuesday arrested a suspect for offering officers a one million naira bribe to secure the release of a kidnapping suspect.

Command Spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa in a statement to reporters said the suspect, Bamuwa Umaru, 62, was arrested on December 16 last year in Sabon Local Government Area Gari, Kaduna State.

He approached the officer in charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, State Criminal Investigation Department, Kano State Command, Aliyu Mohammed, a police superintendent and offered him the sum of a million naira as a bribe, Mr Kiyawa said.

"The bribe was intended to secure the release of a certain Yusuf Ibrahim, 27, from Danjibga village, Tsafe Local Government Area, Zamfara State, a suspected kidnapper arrested at Rijiyar Zaki in Kano.

"Yusuf Ibrahim was arrested by an Operation Restore Peace team led by Usman Abdullahi, (a chief superintendent of police) in charge of Kano's Rijiyar Zaki division.

"The suspect was arrested after being identified by a driver they kidnapped along the Funtuwa-Gusau road, and collected N500,000 as a ransom before his release.

"During the preliminary investigation, the (previous) suspect confessed to the crime and further confessed to participating in a series of kidnappings in the villages of Scheme, Yankara, Askari and Kucheri in the states of Katsina and of Zamfara, respectively.

“He further confessed that his syndicate members killed approximately ten (10) of their kidnapped victims, and he alone killed two (2) of the victims. investigation.
