Oscars 2023: Harry Styles has two films hoping for awards glory

The Oscars are still eight months away, but movie awards season is already taking shape. The most serious contenders tend to cluster towards the end of the year, and three film festivals in particular.

Venice, Telluride (in Colorado ) and Toronto all take place within days of each other in late August and September, and compete to host the best films.

Even if it doesn't get every major movie playing at other events, Toronto is a reliable predictor of the Oscars.

Over the past decade, the festival's People's Choice Award winner , voted for by moviegoers, has consistently landed Best Picture nominations, with a few films – Green Book and Nomadland – winning.

"It's the greatest testament to our audience,” says Cameron Bailey, CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). t the first audience in the world to see some of these films. They follow their own enthusiasms, passions and excitement.

"It's a city that I think has a unique movie audience. A city of very knowledgeable about movies, but never snobby about movies. And they're willing to follow what they're passionate about. They're not shy about falling in love with movies."

Here are 23 films, the majority of which have not yet been seen by the public, that could be in the running for the 2023 Oscars.
