A famous pop star has been arrested in Turkey after implying that the country's religious schools raise perverts.

Gulsen Bayraktar Colakoglu, 46, widely known in Turkey as Gulsen, was arrested on Thursday August 25 in Istanbul.

Her arrest came following an investigation by the city's attorney general's office in which the 46-year-old was found to be "inciting people to hatred and hostility."

The accusations are believed to refer to remarks made on stage by the singer about Turkish religious schools Imam Hatip, of which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is an alumnus.

Footage obtained from a concert Gulsen held in April this year hears the singer say, "He had studied at an Imam Hatip school. That's where his perversion comes from."

A lawyer argued that Gulsen was arrested because of her stage outfits, beliefs, "defiant attitude" and support for LGBT people (
