Turning Django Unchained Snowy Quickdraw Scene was a tricky technical process

If you've ever seen a movie that uses fake snow noticeably, it's probably because shooting in reality can lead to problems. During a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Quentin Tarantino explained how he had to prepare for the complications surrounding the film's equipment. "I just had to assume there would be times when the lenses would freeze, or the big camera would freeze," Tarantino said.

As for Django's quick draw sequence, however, the freezing temperature was so cold that it not only put a strain on the filming equipment, but also on the props:

"Even the guns weren't working. And that was the day we were doing the Django quick draw. So literally between takes you had a hair dryer on the lenses and a hair dryer hair on the guns to make sure they were hot enough."

You always hope the elements work in your favor, but sometimes that just has to make things harder, especially with your cast and crew trying to keep the operation going in an unpredictable environment. Either way, Tarantino was able to get what he needed, and Jamie Foxx came out the other side looking like one of the sweetest villains in the West.

"Django Unchained" is currently streaming on Paramount+.
