Vladimir Putin is "failing on all of his strategic military goals", a senior Royal Navy officer has said.

The Russian president has failed to take control of Ukraine, including its capital Kyiv, weaken NATO or break the international will and lack manpower to win the war, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin told the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg.

Sir Tony, the current Chief of Defence, said: 'At the very beginning we said that this was a strategic mistake by President Putin and that strategic mistakes have strategic consequences.< /p>

"And in this case, it's a strategic failure. Putin is failing on all of his strategic military goals, he wanted to subjugate Ukraine, that's not going to happen.

Sir Tony said Putin had wanted to take over the capital Kyiv but was defeated early on, while his mission to weaken NATO also failed, with the union now looking more strong as Finland and Sweden consider joining.

He continued, "[Putin] wants to break international resolve. Well, actually, it's gotten stronger over this period, and he's under pressure, his problems are getting worse.

"He's always had a problem in terms of the crew of the equipment he has. He doesn't have enough manpower. His forces are thin on the ground.

"And we also see magnificent Ukrainian armed forces who have been brave, who are fighting for their country and who have accepted the international support that we all provide."

With Putin struggling with manpower, the president resorted to four hundred hardened criminals, according to video footage.
