The two candidates vying to be the next Prime Minister have vowed to host the victorious Lionesses of England if they win - after the story-makers were snubbed by Boris Johnson.

Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have both pledged to host a reception for the team, who will not be honored with a visit to Downing Street this week.

Mr. Johnson was at Lord Trimble's funeral yesterday and is due to go on holiday from tomorrow until Sunday.

There are no plans to welcome the winners of Euro 2022 to Downing Street before Mr Johnson's final departure.

International teams, including the England men's cricket team after the Ashes won in 2005, and the country's rugby stars after winning the World Cup in 2003, have been invited to Downing Street.

The women's national rugby and cricket teams have also been honored in the past with receptions at No 10.

Foreign Secretary Ms Truss has also promised to ensure the team are "recognized for their historic victory in the appropriate way", amid calls to honor them.

A spokesperson for the Truss campaign said, "The Lionesses have been an inspiration to our nation.

"Liz will host a reception at No 10 if she is Prime Minister in September and her government will ensure the Lionesses are appropriately recognized for their historic win."

Mr Sunak's team said he would also welcome the Lionesses to Downing Street if he was made Prime Minister.

Asked on Monday whether Mr Johnson would support the femininity of the team after winning at Wembley, his official spokesman said: "The Prime Minister would certainly want to see the team receive the recognition they so rightly deserve for his historic victory.

"On honors in particular, there is obviously a process that is up to the independent honors committee, but clearly the public wants to see (c...
