Ronaldo charged by FA over phone incident involving Everton fan

Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged by the Football Association (FA) over an incident involving an Everton fan following Manchester United's defeat at Goodison Park last season.

A video has emerged on social media showing United striker Ronaldo appearing to smash a supporter's phone as he left the pitch after Everton's 1-0 Premier League victory in April.

The Portuguese captain was questioned by Merseyside Police over an alleged assault and criminal damage and received a warning last month.

The FA confirmed on Friday that they have now charged the 37-year-old with breaching rule E3, which relates to 'inappropriate and/or violent conduct'.

Ronaldo then posted an apology on Instagram, saying, "It's never easy to deal with emotions in difficult times like the one we're facing.

"Nevertheless, we must always be respectful, patient and set an example for all young people who love the beautiful game.

"I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship."

Ronaldo has endured a disappointing spell on the pitch for United this season, starting just one of his first six Premier League appearances.

He is currently on an international trip with Portugal, who will face the Czech Republic on Friday before hosting Spain next week in their Nations League double tie.
