The Frieze Los Angeles Art Fair is really all about parties

Before the four days of the Frieze art fair in Los Angeles, party at the Getty Villa and outbid Dr. Dre in a transformed skating rink in auction house.

“I think Frieze is fantastic,” said James Corden. "I went to the one in London before anyone in Los Angeles even knew what it was."

It was Tuesday in Los Angeles, and Mr. Corden , the late former party host who now lives in London, was at the Holmby Hills home of Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records and former chief executive of Beats Electronics. About 225 people gathered for an art auction hosted by Mr. Iovine and Dr. Dre and organized by Sotheby's.

The event was part of 'a week of art lectures and exhibitions. and dinners culminating in Frieze Los Angeles, a four-day contemporary art fair held at the Santa Monica Airport.

Frieze debuted in London in 2003 and has since expanded to New York. City, Los Angeles and Seoul. (Last year, Frieze also purchased two existing art fairs, Expo Chicago and Armory Show in Manhattan.)

It was Frieze's fifth year in Los Angeles and, as Mr. Corden noted, the event is growing on the west coast. Simon Fox, the managing director of Frieze, estimates that the festivities have doubled in scale compared to last year. “I think we counted over 150 different events that took place in the city around the fair,” he said. "The city is exploding."
