Nadhim Zahawi backs Truss for next PM as Damian Green endorses Sunak

Tory MP Damian Green has announced his support for Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership race while Nadhim Zahawi has thrown his support behind Liz Truss.

As chairman of the One Nation Tory Group, Mr Green's endorsement will give some boost to leadership candidate Rishi Sunak.

Meanwhile, writing for The Telegraph, the Chancellor said Ms Truss, the Foreign Secretary, "will overturn outdated economic orthodoxy and run our economy conservatively."

Rishi Sunak will hail Mr Green's endorsement after Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and former leadership hopeful Tom Tugend hat announced they were backing Liz Truss to be prime minister.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Westminster Hour, Mr Green said: "I think he [Rishi Sunak] would make a very, very good Prime Minister for meet the enormous challenges we have over the next two years and I think he is in a very good position to unify the party, which is essential to win the next election."

M. added: "The only thing I have regretted over the last few weeks is the tone of the election campaign, which has become quite personal. There have been a lot of personal attacks on Rishi, I urge everyone involved to scale things down a bit or else you're writing Labor Party campaign leaflets for the next election."

The former Minister of The Resa May said Rishi Sunak had shown in the pandemic that he could find solutions to difficult situations. “Rishi has handled the terrible problems of the pandemic very well. There's no denying that the furlough program has been a huge success,” Green said.

"We thought we would emerge from the pandemic with several million unemployed, but in fact we have historically low unemployment and it shows that in the face of a crisis, Rishi can actually conjure up a solution that makes a real difference for millions of people and I think that is what we need in the next Prime Minister Mr Sunak is now backed by three former leadership rivals each

Mr Green said the One Nation group met on Friday with more than 50 people in attendance and revealed there was a "small plurality" for Rishi Sunak over Liz Truss.

During Meanwhile, Mr. Zahawi wrote, "Liz understands that the status quo is not an option in times of crisis. To quote the excellent economist Sam Bowman, we need an “invigorating” attitude to the economy, not a “catastrophic” attitude, in order to deal with the cost of living problems. and the challenges we face on the world stage. Liz will overturn outdated economic orthodoxy and lead our economy conservatively."

He added that the Treasury needs political leadership to bring about a "radical change" in the way the nation's finances are managed.
